The cold and flu are especially popular during the winter. Our immune systems require extra TLC during the colder months of the year in order to fight off or prevent illness. Doing what you can stay healthy can make a difference in your body’s ability to fight off the common cold.

Follow these tips to remain in optimal health:

Get Regular Exercise

Exercising during the winter can be especially difficult. Between the gloomy weather and the desire to snuggle up on the sofa with a warm cup of tea or coffee, getting to the local gym can feel like a drag. However, physical activity is especially important when it comes to the flu and cold because it helps boost the immune system. Research reveals that since exercise makes our hearts beat faster it can strengthen our immune system in return. Wash Your Hands Frequently

Get Plenty of Sleep and Do What You Can to Avoid Stress

The body needs sleep to recover. A lack of sleep can have a negative impact on our immune systems. Eight to ten hours of sleep per night is the average recommendation. With less sleep, you become more susceptible to the cold and flu. Additionally, it’s important to do what you can to avoid stress. When our bodies go into stress mode they’re unable to decrease in productivity. You might notice an inability to sleep, the urge to eat sugary foods, and overwhelming heads that prevent you from doing regular activities. If you work in a stressful environment, be sure to make time for activities you enjoy. Whether it’s watching a movie, reading a book, or catching up with friends over dinner. The better and happier you feel the less likely you are to get sick.
