3 Exams All Women Should Routinely Schedule

The saying “what you don’t know won’t hurt you” should never apply when it comes to your health. As women, we must keep our health at the forefront of our priorities. Undoubtedly, we live busy lives and the majority of us naturally place everything from our families, work, and friends before ourselves. But taking some time to focus on our personal health is absolutely necessary.

To maintain good health, there are three vital exams available specifically for women that can detect issues related to our bodies. Early detection is imperative to prevention. In addition to finding problems early on, most of these exams do not require more than an hour of your time.

Pap Test and Pelvic Exam

Beginning at the age of 21 or when you become sexually active, it’s necessary to have a pap test and pelvic exam at minimum every two years. This exam can reveal any early signs of cervical cancer. According to Cancer.net, the rate of cervical cancer dropped 50% between 1975 and 2014 thanks to the increase of pelvic exams. Given that cervical cancer often has zero symptoms, it’s important that women see their gynecologist every two years.

Breast Exam

With more awareness of breast cancer, breast exam rates have increased over the past couple of years. This good news does come with some drawback as there is still a lack of women who need to be tested early on. The goal for doctors around the nation is to increase breast exams for women beginning at the age of 20 and then every three years until their 40th birthday. Once women turn 40, they should schedule a breast exam every two years.

Cardiovascular Exam

One of the leading causes of death in women is heart disease. Unfortunately, the majority of women fail to be tested for issues related to their health such as cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglycerides, which are all linked to the potential of heart disease. When you go through a heart exam, your doctor will be able to recommend changes to your diet and lifestyle that could positively affect your health, including minimizing the risk of a heart attack.
